Summary

Its good when a species has a distinctive feature and you can identify it straight away without recourse to books. The swallow-tail moth is certainly one of those species!

In common with its namesake, the swallow-tail butterfly, this moth has pointed bits on its underwings which give it that unique swallow-tail look. Sadly, the ove I caught and photographed was damaged so it is not the best picture, nor does the colouring in the photo do the moth justice. I must do better!

Quite common in July, it likes ivy as a foodplant for its young so it is quite diverse in its habitat preferences. It actually is happy using other shrubs to lay its eggs on as well.
